Have you ever wondered why your toilet is running constantly? Don’t worry. You’re not the only one. It’s truly one of the bathroom’s biggest mysteries. Not only is it a nuisance, but it can also cost you. After all, it’s extra water that will surely show up on your next water bill.
So what’s actually causing this annoying–but very common–plumbing issue? Here’s the short answer: There’s a leak. The thing is, there are several different areas that could be leaking. You can try to find out what’s behind the issue by looking a little closer yourself. And, as always, you can call Flatley’s for expert plumbing assistance. Our team will figure out the problem and fix it quickly for you.
The many causes of a constantly running toilet:
It’s time to take off the toilet tank cover and take a closer look. If you’re concerned about getting closer to the toilet than you usually do, there’s no need to fret. The water in the tank is clean.
Then, with the toilet tank cover removed, flush the toilet. Here are the most common issues you might see:
- The ballcock isn’t closing properly. If the ballcock isn’t closing right, then water will leak.
- The floatball isn’t in the right place or it’s damaged. If the floatball isn’t working properly, the water in the tank will fill up too high and leak.
- The flush valve isn’t working correctly. Do you have to jiggle the flush handle several times before the water stops running? This means that the connection between the flush valve and the tankball is faulty.
- The flapper valve or tankball isn’t doing what it should. If either of these parts are damaged or broken, the toilet will leak.
If you notice any of these toilet parts not working as they should, then the mystery is over. However, it’s still time to fix the problem. That’s where plumbing expertise comes in.
