Basement Flood Control System

Here in the Chicago Suburbs, basement flooding is not an uncommon problem. Due to an overabundance of older drain and sewer systems, many residents often find that the lower levels of our homes or properties have excess water that ranges in severity depending on the weather. The city has even founded a Basement Flooding Partnership in an effort to reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rains, and inform local residents about preventative measures. By contacting Flatley’s Plumbing Express to install a flood control system in your home or business, you will be taking a step towards protecting your property from costly damage and destruction.

What’s a Flood Control System?

Like the name says, a flood control system is put in place to prevent flood water in your basement and reduce the damage it does to your property. Because Chicago and its suburbs typically have a lot of old pipes and sewer systems, heavy rains can easily trigger excess water or flooding in your basement.

Types of Flooding Control Systems?

  • Standpipes

This flood control system works with your basement floor drains. They are inexpensive, and installation is minimally invasive. A standpipe is placed into each separate floor drain, and works with water pressure to keep your basement from flooding. Since the standpipe lies slightly above floor level, so any water “standing” inside of it counters the pressure of any water that flows back into your basement. Simple physics!

  • Backwater Valve

A backwater valve essentially prevents wastewater or sewage from flowing back into your pipes. Whether it’s from your toilet, showers, or sewer system, the valve stops outbound water from returning into your home or flooding your basement.

  • Overhead Sewer

This system lifts up the lowest access point in your plumbing system. Truly bringing your system “overhead’ and well above the existing sewer level, water and sewage leaks are prevented.

  • Sump Pumps

These pumps are common across the country, but here in the Chicago suburbs, they are especially beneficial. They are placed in a pit in your basement (the sump). As the water rises in this sump pit, its pumped out through pipes that lead outdoors.

Tips to Avoid Basement Flooding

  • Make sure gutters and its spouts are clean and clear
  • Keep a dehumidifier in your basement
  • Install a plastic barrier between concrete and wood floor/carpets
  • Make sure drywall in your basement is properly installed and in good condition.
  • If you have a sump pump, have it inspected and serviced routinely to prevent any major malfunctions when you need it most.

Because flooding in Chicagoland is so common, you may want to consider installing one of these preventative flood control methods in your home or business.

WHAT SOME OF OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN SAYING

Our Testimonials

We love our clients and they love our work. Our team is very experienced in both residential and commercial projects.
I called early in the morning and they had someone to my house within a few hours.  Turns out the situation really needed to be fixed ASAP; not only did they get workers and permits immediately, but the crew worked amid a down pour so that we could have working water again.  They were professional, prompt, and provided great work. Highly recommend them.
